Our Philosophy
A union is not simply having a contract; it's a way of changing the dynamics of the workplace. With a union, workers not only have a voice, they have the responsibility of using that voice to help create a better working environment for all our brothers and sisters. Thus, the drive to organize does not end with recognition. Organizing ourselves is a way of life. It is the ongoing effort before and after contracts are negotiated that gives life to our local, labor and other social movements and indeed to the contracts themselves. A staff that communicates and organizes well amongst themselves is a staff more prepared to deal effectively with their management across a whole range of issues -- from changes in the size of the unit to workplace democracy and diversity issues to the very content of each organization's campaigns and research.
Understanding of NGO Workplaces
Our local understands that NGOs, research and advocacy organizations have specific needs and unique characteristics that demand special attention at each individual organization. There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to organizing and collective bargaining at progressive non-profits. We believe that unions can enhance the work of non-profits by making them more functional organizations, if contracts are negotiated that best fit the needs of employees at a particular organization. For that reason, we emphasize organizing strategies, contract provisions and ongoing servicing that look and feel different from traditional unions.
Low Dues That Stay In House
The average dues in our local are about $15 per month, less than half of nearly all the locals in the DC area. Dues are assessed at 0.5 percent of each worker's monthly salary. More importantly, ~60 percent of dues stay in house at the local level, so that our members get to determine their use. You get lots more bang for your buck at local 70.
Progressive Politics and Coalitions
The quality of union life and politics is determined at the local level, which is why our local has quickly become a leading force in DC organizing and politics across issues. We are active members of the DC chapter of Jobs with Justice and the Metro Labor Council. We have sent donations for various strike funds and for various humanitarian crisis relief funds. We have sent delegates to national and national conferences and we make sure our members not only have the time and information they need to improve their own shop, but also to participate more fully in local, national and international politics.
